I grew up in New Zealand and have lived in London, Sydney and San Diego. I travelled alone, or with friends in my 20’s. The months I spent backpacking through Africa and Asia are some of my most memorable travel experiences.

Pete was raised in Australia and has lived in Christchurch, Sydney and San Diego. In his younger years he backpacked through most of Europe, camping and rock-climbing along the way. He now has a passion for kiteboarding.

Today we are two 50ish parents and three teen girls, based in Australia. We love the outdoors and we have tried to instil a passion for the outdoors and travel in our kids. I’m not gonna lie. They haven’t always wanted to go hiking or rock-climbing, and we have listened to our fair share whinging over the years, but you just need to start small and build on their adventurous spirit.

The expense of taking a family of five on holiday is something else. Luckily I come from a long line of cheapskates. The girls wouldn’t know what it’s like to travel on anything but a budget airline. The numerous trips have not been without delays, cancellations and horrendous arrival times, but when they are watching elephants in the wild or swimming on a tropical island, those memories melt away……mostly……ok some will haunt us forever!

The majority of our accommodation is budget to mid range hotels or AirBnb rentals. Saving money on flights and accomodation leaves you more to spend on fun or expensive activities, and the more money you save, the more holidays you can afford!
