One of the most affordable, but least comfortable, places we ever stayed turned out to be the most memorable – a hut on the beach in Fiji. For a family of 5 on a tropical Island in Fiji AU$220 per night is a bargain! Our hut contained a small bar fridge, average beds, water that dribbled from the shower and once when it rained we found a goat sheltering on our balcony. But, what it lacked in comfort it made up for in location. It had incredible ocean views, snorkelling twenty metres from the doorstep and just down the path was a small village with lots of friendly kids.
We’ve found that the more memorable experiences are not necessarily the most expensive ones. They are usually the unexpected ones, which tend to happen when you take a few risks and embrace your surroundings. You don’t need buckets of money to travel. There are loads of adventures just waiting to be had, whether you’re camping close to home or travelling to exotic, distant lands. In this generation of online-anything and virtual-everything we have a duty to help our kids experience the real world, and to give them some amazing memories!
